Red Letter Day
I love my Bible.
There are very few pages that don't have something highlighted, underlined, starred, or arrowed. It is the only journal I have ever stuck with, the story of my life.
Scriptures have dates for when they struck me as most meaningful. Sweet friends' names are in there beside verses they shared with me. There are notes from many sermons, ideas from many ministers over the years. I can visualize my favorite verses and know what side of the page to find them on. It is a record of almost a quarter-century of joys and sorrows.
When it started to fall apart, I went to Mardel's to pick out a new Bible. I handled at least a dozen, looked at a variety of translations, and then put them all back. It wasn't going to work.
I found a place online, sent it off, and got it back within two weeks. New binding, new cover, old pages. It is absolutely perfect for me.
As I was trying to come up with a direction for this little blog to go, I went to my Bible. I looked at the scriptures I had marked, the notes, the memories. And I was struck that it actually came with markings of its own in the very beginning.
Jesus' words are clearly marked in red; and many of them are also marked in blue and pink and green as well. They are certainly some of the sweetest words in that Bible.
And though I have commented on many of them before, is it ever possible to spend too much time in the words and life of Jesus? Our precious Lord left his throne in heaven to come to this troubled earth just so we could be saved. I am honored beyond measure to be able to spend time resting in his words.
I hope you can join me.
