That Jezebel!

There was a once a little church. The people there did much that was good. They were loving and faithful.

But there was a thorn in the roses, and her name was Jezebel. She thought a lot of herself and even announced that she was a prophetess. Jezebel always volunteered to teach, but her teaching was not in line with God's word. Because of that, she began to poison the church. She was a talented speaker and teacher, and many of the people followed her.

I imagine that most churches have a constant need for good teachers. Those responsible for filling the pulpit or the classrooms may not be as discerning as they should.  Maybe that was what happened in that little church. But probably, Jezebel's personality was so overwhelming that everyone was afraid to cross her. Haven't we all known someone like that?

Regardless, she was doing harm rather than good.

The lessons for us are myriad. But I suppose we can just pick a couple for today. If you teach, be careful that what you teach is in line with God's will. If you listen, be careful that what you hear is in line with his will.

Watch out for Jezebels.

"Nevertheless, I have this against you. You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols."  Revelation 2:20

"Let my teaching fall like rain, and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants." Deuteronomy 32:2

"Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Acts 17:11
