Praying for Rain

The big tank by our house is almost dry. We haven't had the gully-washing spring and fall rains for several years now. The lakes are way down as are the aquifers. The local well-digger (whose name is Dog, by the way) said it would be pointless for us to dig a well since "there ain't any water under here." A large portion of our state is in severe drought, including our county.

Most people seem unaware. After all, it has rained. Yards are green, flowers are blooming. Things don't look too bad on the surface.

I have to be careful that my spiritual life isn't like that--green on the surface and bone dry underneath. I know how to talk a good game and act in all the right ways. I can almost fool myself.

Deep down, I know when my soul is dry.  But it doesn't have to stay that way. The clouds are heavy with the rain of God's love. He longs to fill me to overflowing with the blessings of his presence.

And so I pray for rain.

Deep drenching rains that will fill our lakes and rivers and replenish the underground waters of our land. Deep drenching rains that will fill our hearts and souls and spirits.

Pray for rain.

"Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." James 5:8

"When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain, and brings out the wind from his storehouses."  Jeremiah 10:13
