The Torch

The opening ceremonies for the Olympics are a bit of a beating to be honest. They seldom make any sense to me, and they seem to go on forever. There are really only two parts I care about--the entrance of the countries and the lighting of the cauldron.

Who would light the flame and how it would be lit were closely guarded secrets. Speculation went on for weeks as to who the British had chosen. And now that it's done, I still can't tell you who lit it. It was no one famous. Rather, it was a bunch of kids.

The analogy of carrying the torch to carrying God's word is an easy one to make. I tell someone, they tell someone, and the message spreads.

But I had never really thought of it in terms of the anonymity of the runners. Oh sure, I know David Beckham brought it the last little bit, but other than that I really have no idea who carried it all those miles.

We don't need to be famous or important to carry God's torch. We don't have to be able to run a mile or be strong enough to hold the torch up high.

All we have to do is be willing. Willing to run. Willing to labor without notice or accolades or recognition.

And the flame will light the world.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16
