Drought

Although we have had some sweet rain over the last week or so, Texas remains in a drought. (As a matter of fact, apparently 80% of the nation is in a drought.  It's dry out there!) The Texas Forest Service reported that so far Texas has lost 5 million urban trees and as many as 500 million in outlying areas.

That's a lot of trees.

So why do some make it through and others don't? Even somebody as uneducated in forestry as I am knows at least a few of the answers. Some species are better suited for dry weather. Mature trees are stronger than young trees. And trees planted near a water source have a distinct advantage.

Sounds a lot like us, doesn't it?

It's a familiar metaphor. But as we go through another hot, dry summer it doesn't hurt to remind ourselves how much like those trees we really are--how desperately we need water to survive.

But unlike the trees, we have access to a never-ending stream of living water. There is no need to be thirsty. Drink deep. There is plenty. Share.

"He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers." Psalm 1:3

"I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink..." Matthew 25:35
