The Leader

"Follow me..."  Mark 1:17

It is an important job, line leader. There are other jobs--door holder, caboose--but line leader is obviously the premier position.

If you are in kindergarten, you know that the line leader is always first when your class leaves the room. Everyone else follows you. Make no mistake, being first is very important when you are five.

Of course, five year olds aren't the only ones that like to be first. So do fifty year olds.

We may pretend that we like being the caboose or even the door holder. But deep down, most of us really want to be the line leader.  We assume that everyone wants to go where we go, do things the way that we do.

Like children who have trouble staying in line, we have the tendency to push the leader out of the way so people can follow us instead.

We don't do it intentionally. Sometimes we don't even realize what we have done.

But being a follower of Jesus means that we never get to be line leader again.

He gets to choose where we go.

We just need to stay in line.
