Bigger
Yesterday during his sermon, Doug read a quote by C.S. Lewis from the series Chronicles of Narnia. (And I will repeat what he said--if you haven't read the books, do it. Or see the movies. Pronto.) Without going into a lot of detail, what you need to know is that the story has a mighty lion named Aslan who is a figure of God. And that Lucy is a little girl who loves Aslan and sees him again after a long absence.
"Aslan," said Lucy. "You're bigger."
"That is because you are older, little one," answered he.
"Not because you are?"
"I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger."
--Prince Caspian, The Return to Narnia
I am so taken with that thought. The more I grow in God, the bigger he becomes to me. He doesn't change. Rather, the change is in me.
But the flip side of that is just as true. If God is no different to me than he was a year ago, then I am the one who is not growing.
This world is full of people who think God is too small--too small to handle the sorrows, the tragedies, the disasters. Too small to care. Too small to even notice. And so they prefer to live with no God at all.
I don't believe those things. I know he is bigger than anything of this world.
And yet.
(Thanks, Doug. Your thoughts moved me deeply.)
