This Is the Day

This is Tuesday morning. I have an expectation of how my workday is going to go. I have a plan.

But I also have a job that lends itself to surprises. New and unexpected little friends walk in to enroll. Teachers call with a need--someone can't be understood, someone can't stop crying.

Over the intercom, "Mrs. Sloan, can  you come to the office please?"

And before you know it my day has become filled with the unexpected.

Some people struggle with that kind of day. The interruptions annoy them, and they are unhappy if their plans go awry.

But I have learned to expect the unexpected and to embrace the surprises that happen along the way. After all, my job is seldom boring.

Every morning I get up, and I think I know what God has planned for the rest of my day as well. After all, I have a calendar and a list and the expectation of what will be accomplished today.

The thing is that I don't remember ever writing into a list "God's plans."

Yet I can't count the number of days when what I was doing was thrown out simply because God had another plan.

Maybe what I need to practice is the habit of handing my day to God before I make a list--to stretch out my hands saying, "Here. Do with it what you will. After all, it is your day anyway. You made it."

Not grudgingly. Not with dread. But with joy and eager anticipation.

This seems a good day to start.

"In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation." Psalm 5:3

"This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it. "  Psalm 118:24
