Lola

We have a new friend. Her name is Lola. She likes to hang out in the front yard in the shade of the big, oak trees.

She is only a bit fearful of us, and that makes us fearful for her.

After all, the world is not a kind place when you are a sweet doe, and deer season is rapidly approaching. We wish we could tell her, "Stay here. Stay close to us. This place is safe."

Of course, this world is not a kind place for many of its people, either.

How is it that this world, created by the very breath of God, is so hungry and homeless and hopeless and poor?

Much to my sorrow, I can't protect Lola. But I can be a safe haven for a struggling child. I can feed someone who is hungry, and I can reach a hand to someone who is sinking. I can speak up and speak out.

Today.
