Upgrade
My little laptop didn't get any rest last night. She spent the whole time downloading the new Mountain Lion system. Because I dearly love the little laptop, I always want to get her the latest and greatest things to make her life easier. So next, she is getting the latest version of IPhoto.
All those upgrades take a long time. Sometimes they are complicated. But new and improved capabilities require effort.
Wouldn't it be great if we could just push a button and upgrade our lives? Download an app to get rid of the struggles of life? Have new skills and talents overnight?
If only. Instead, change comes slowly and often painfully. It comes whether we seek it or not. We may try to hide from change, but it always finds us.
I don't know why we fear change so much. We change our hair, we change our clothes, we change lanes. So why are we so afraid to change our thinking, our feelings, our deep inner thoughts?
If little laptop were not willing to change and grow, she would gradually become useless to me. She would be unable to do the things I need her to do.
And if I am unwilling to change and grow, I run the risk of being unable to do the things God needs me to do.
One more thing about little laptop--she cannot upgrade herself without me. And I cannot upgrade myself without God.
Upgrade me.
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..."(Romans 12:2)
"In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! (Hebrews 5:12)
"His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." (2 Peter 1:3)
