Happy New Year!
It's time for me to go back to school today. And though there were no watch parties last night and no one sang "Auld Lang Syne," today is truly the beginning of the new year for me. January just doesn't cut it.
The new year will start slowly with only teachers invited to the opening activities. The opening of the new cans of Play-Dough (ahhh-breathe deep of the sweet smell!) The new Crayolas (no off brands, please) with their sharp points and untorn wrappers. The blank notebooks with no mark outs or smudges. The unchewed pencils with untouched erasers. All fresh, all new.
And then of course, there are the class lists. Who are these children? Who will be the academic star? The funny one? Who will be the child of sorrow? Today they are still a mystery.
On their first day of school, they will come in with eyes bright and with unparalleled excitement over beginning such an amazing adventure. They are like the new pencils and paper and erasers that fill their new backpacks--full of promise for the future.
They are the reason we are here.
And so, here's to the children. Lift your Sonic Route 44 high, and let's toast the future. And may that toast be a deep and sincere prayer that we will bless each child who comes our way. May they see Jesus in us, and may we see Jesus in each of them.
"Let my teaching fall like rain
and my words descend like dew,
like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants." Deuteronomy 32:2
