The Wonder Years
Having just finished reading a memoir of sorts, I have been doing a little time traveling myself. Looking back on my childhood, it seems that life should have been so uncomplicated compared to today. Of course, nothing could be farther from the truth.
It's a wonder any of us grew up, since safety wasn't much of a concern to anyone. We wandered all over town with no supervision. There were no seat belts, and the prime car-riding location was the ledge behind the back seat. The city swimming pool had a high board, and we slathered our bodies with Coppertone oil. After hearing a hell and brimstone sermon, men gathered outside to light up, have a smoke and talk about the preacher. We ate white bread and sprayed DDT for mosquitoes.
Kennedy, Vietnam, Watergate, Woodstock. Some of the most defining things of my childhood are described in single words.
I suppose it wasn't a simpler, safer time after all.
Almost from the beginning of time sin has been having a heyday on this old world.
Sometimes I just get tired of waiting.
"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority." Acts 1:7
