On the Road Again

The West Texas road lay straight and smooth. The sky was clear and blue, and we could see for miles.

But even in West Texas, not all roads run so straight. Sometimes they twist and turn. There is no way of knowing what lies around the curves. The sky may darken, and the winds blow cold.

It would seem that the straight and smooth road would always be the safe and easy way, but it bears dangers as well. It is easy to become complacent and bored and sleepy. Our minds wander and our concentration diminishes. We set the cruise control and trust our car and the road to keep us straight.

But, oh that winding road.

It can be difficult and hard, and we fear that we may lose our way. But it is also exciting, and we grow stronger from the challenge. Who knows what may lie around the curve? We would miss so much if we never left the straight road.

Isn't our journey through life much the same? When it seems easy and untroubled, we often feel confident that we have everything under control. We feel as though we are in need of nothing. Even God.

Yet when the skies darken and the road winds, we realize that we are not in control of anything. We find ourselves much in need of everything.

Strength.

Wisdom.

Courage.

We find we need God more than we could ever have imagined.

And it is on that winding road that we just may find the greatest adventure of our lives.
