Amazing Race

Amazing Race is a great show. Couples race around the world from exotic location to exotic location, following clues and completing challenges. I kick back in my easy chair and wonder what it would be like to be in the race. I am sure I could ace solving the puzzles, but there is no way I am in good enough shape to do the physical challenges. (Hence, the easy chair.) The crew would have to pick me up off the side of the road within the first two hours.

Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus stepped out of heaven into an amazing race of his own. Except for a little trip to Egypt there was nothing exotic about his path.  He was never even very far from home.

But amazing is inadequate to describe his journey. Feeding the multitudes, healing the sick, calming the storm, raising the dead. Being loved, being hated. I dare anyone to compare his road to theirs.

And instead of a million dollars, the end of his race brought him face to face with death on a cross.

Of course we know that the end was not the end at all. It was only the beginning. It was the greatest victory of all time.

Jesus returned home to the cheers of angels.

Now it is our turn. Jesus isn't content to kick back on his throne and watch us run from afar. He doesn't fast forward through the boring parts. From the moment we step onto the course, he is right beside us. He knows the way wherever we go. Whatever the challenges, he takes them on. We may think we are racing in our own strength, but actually we are running in his.

When we reach the finish line, he is right there. Cheering us on. Showing us the way. Leading us home. Crowning us as victors.

And that is better than a million dollars.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but to all those who have longed for his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8
